Anuradhapura Ancient City Tour

One of the world’s great ancient cities – Anuradhapura is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as Sri Lanka’s first great capital for over a thousand years and produced some of the most impressive feats of sacred architecture and hydraulic engineering in the ancient world. This full-day tour explores the vast sacred city with a guide whose depth of knowledge gives every monument the historical and spiritual context it deserves.

Sri Maha Bodhi – The Sacred Bodhi Tree

The oldest documented living human-planted tree on earth – grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment and tended without interruption for over 2,300 years – surrounded during morning puja by pilgrims from across Asia in an atmosphere of genuinely moving devotional intensity. Standing before this ancient tree in the compound’s sacred silence is one of the most humbling and quietly extraordinary experiences Sri Lanka offers.

– Ruwanwelisaya & Abhayagiri Stupas

The Ruwanwelisaya is a hemispherical white dome of solid brick rising 90 metres above the ancient plain, built in the 2nd century BCE with engineering sophistication that modern archaeologists still study, its base encircled by the constant quiet murmur of pilgrims at circumambulation. The Abhayagiri Monastery nearby was once one of the largest monastic complexes in the ancient world, its vast grounds and partially excavated ruins still radiating a sense of the extraordinary scale of monastic life at Anuradhapura’s height.

– Isurumuniya Temple & Ancient Reservoirs

The Isurumuniya Rock Temple is intimate, atmospheric, and home to the celebrated Isurumuniya Lovers carving – a 6th-century depiction of a royal couple considered one of the finest examples of ancient Sri Lankan sculptural art, set within a compound of sacred pools and lotus-filled tanks. The ancient reservoirs surrounding the city – Tissa Wewa and Nuwara Wewa in particular – attract exceptional waterbird diversity and give Anuradhapura’s vast archaeological landscape a particular natural beauty at the water’s edge in the late afternoon.
